Start the School Year by Building Strong Relationships
As you kick off a new school year, one of the most important things you can do is focus on building positive, meaningful relationships with the children in your classroom.
Start by learning as much as you can about each child! Try fun "get to know you" activities or send home interest surveys for families. Greeting each child warmly as they arrive each day helps them feel welcomed and valued—showing them you're excited they're there!
Take time to listen when children share stories or talk about their interests. When you show curiosity and empathy, you're letting them know their thoughts and feelings matter.
Don't forget to give positive feedback and celebrate successes, big or small. Sharing about yourself also builds connection—children feel closer to you when they get to know you!
And perhaps the most powerful way to bond? Spend quality time playing or reading with them. Taking a moment out of your busy day to engage one-on-one can make a lasting impact on a child’s sense of belonging and trust. Let’s make the start of this school year one filled with connection, kindness, and joy!
