Provider Tip of the Week: Leadership Tips for a New School Year

As we begin a brand-new school year, one of the ways to support children is by building strong, trusting relationships with the adults who care for them.

When families feel seen, heard, and valued, they’re more likely to engage with you and your program.

Consider sending a short “Getting to Know You” message during the first few weeks of the year, whether it’s a handwritten note or an email. Share one or more fun facts about yourself and why you’re excited about the year ahead, and invite families to tell you something unique about their child.

These early touchpoints show families that their voices matter and that you truly want to know their child as an individual.

Here are some ideas to continue to connect throughout the school year:

  • Create a “family wall” in your classroom or hallway where each child can post a photo of their family. It’s a simple way to honor home life and help children feel secure and connected.

  • Set up a “classroom connection jar” at drop-off or pick-up - families can write quick notes to their child (such as “We’re so proud of you!” or “Have fun today!”) and place them in the jar for you to read aloud later.

  • Offer a family check-in form or informal conference in the first month to hear about parents’ hopes, concerns, and goals.

The beginning of the year is a perfect opportunity to lay the foundation for partnership. A little effort now can lead to lasting connections all year long.
